On my mother’s birthday this year, I felt something different.
In previous years, the date brought mostly longing and the weight
of her absence. This time, there was happiness in being able to celebrate her differently, even though we can no longer be together physically.

I also felt proud of the woman I am becoming, and of how much of her I recognize in myself.

While painting her portrait, I could almost feel her embrace, hear her saying “I love you,” and imagine the advice only she could give, followed by her unmistakable laugh.

This was the first time I painted my mother. The process made me realize how much of our connection still exists in me. In the painting,
I see her smile, her presence, and the love between us.
